Keep Marriage Religious: Make civil unions for everyone gay or not-gay.

Keep marriage religious; everyone gets civil unions.

Keep marriage religious; everyone gets civil unions.

Time Magazine has opined a “gay-marriage solution” of their own today.  How do we appease both sides of this battle.  Simple, end marriage itself as a legal term.  Though the idea may seem shocking to some, it does have its strong points.  No longer would there be any legal definition of “marriage” because marriage would be between you, your spouse, and your church.  Government entities would only recognize “civil unions” which wouldn’t have any affiliation with a church or faith.  Not satisfied?  Well, there’s got to be some middle ground.

I’ve seen this idea put forth before, but it wasn’t in the media.

Yes, she’s atheist.  And no, I don’t think she’s married, I don’t think she’s even 18.  But does she and Time Magazine make a good point.  Yes!

Two professors offer up their opinion as to why marriage should be taken out of government control.  Douglas W. Kmiec, one of the professors and a supporter of Prop 8, gives his reasons,

“While new terminology for all may at first seem awkward — mostly in greeting-card shops — [it] dovetails with the court’s important responsibility to reaffirm the unfettered freedom of all faiths to extend the nomenclature of marriage as their traditions allow,”

It’s been argued by many gay-marriage opponents that it isn’t the partnership they are against, it’s the term “marriage.”  Time Magazine suggests that if such legislature did come up, which would remove the term marriage from legal definition, that we,

may find that the folks who cling hardest to the word “marriage” are the gay couples themselves.

This might be true, and it’s seems to be missing the point.  If the word “marriage” is removed as a legal definition then any church can choose to define said “marriages” however they’d like.  So, while we’d hardly expect Evangelical churches to begin sanctifying gay “marriages”, we would almost certainly see a rise in churches that did allow for the partnership of gay couples and therefore would perform a marriage ceremony for all people.  For those of us that aren’t religious, gay and straight alike, if church doesn’t play an active role in our lives in general, then why would we need to apply it to our marriage?

Since I’m not religious (in case Godless American didn’t tip you off) then I couldn’t care less if my marriage was called a “marriage” or a civil union.  I know what’s important and my wife knows what’s important and goddamn anyone that thinks love can’t exist without the word “marriage.”

Why do some gay couples fight so hard for the right to use the word marriage?  Because many of them are religious, even if your simple minded religion doesn’t acknowledge their love, and because they want equality.  If we all had civil unions instead of “marriages” then we’d all be equal, “marriage” would stay in the church or faith based lexicon, and religious folks could then argue with each other over their religious freedom to call gay couples “married.”  An added bonus is that this would effectively end the Prop. 8 debate, and further debates about gay marriage.  Keep it in the church, so the rest of us can have some peace and quiet and no one would have to use that overtly ignorant motto, “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”

Hey, God works in mysterious ways sometimes, right?  And when I say “mysterious” I mean, “gay.”  And when I say, “God,” I mean “your average human being in whom God is actually modeled after.”

See, being a fairy is God-like.

See, being a "fairy" is God-like.

Do you understand what spirituality means?.. Every one has a spirit and everyone is spiritual, just it depends what kind of spirit they have! that would mean Government shouldn’t get envolved with any person. I understand what seperation of state and church is but that is not what the constitution meant..If that was the case you would have never heard any of the presidents referring to the bible and God in their speeches..you would of never heard of the government in the past helping churches. That is not how the constitution was meant, it was meant the government was not to take over on how the people were to believe..separation of state and church..they were allowing people to decide how to worship and whom they wanted too.Science and medicine, what year are you living in? Christians teach science, they just don’t teach we came from apes..they don’t accept evolution..there is so many proofs that debunk evolution.medicine is accepted in christian lives but we question if it is needed or not, there is nothing wrong with that. can i ask you something where do you get religious beliefs allow you to kill little girls. You say the laws com first before religion, well the law says no same sex marriages..keep the law..stop..but you want to change it and others the way they want to live. you may not want christianity but there are many that do regardless of what you say!! of course to you i am wrong, because its not what you want.

Correction, SOME Christians don’t believe in evolution, SOME Christians believe in medicine.

I do want to change the law, so it treats us all equally. Everyone should be able to marry whomever they choose to love. Your religion doesn’t OWN marriage.

You’re wrong because you aren’t able to think outside of your own little bubble; you’re only worried about yourself and your own religion.

I am not gay. I am able to look outside of my own situation and see how disgusting it is for the American and Californian governments to promote inequality and actually have laws that dictate inequality.

Society progresses, people change, and laws are rewritten. The idea of marriage being between a man and a woman is religiously based, therefore it doesn’t uphold the ideals of a separation of church and state.

The following years are going to be difficult for you. Society has progressed and less people are subscribing to your religious doctrines. Things are changing, and I think you’re going to have a hard time dealing with change. You’re not the only one that is frightened by change.
But you have no reason to fear; no one is coming after you, and no one is saying that you can’t continue to live how YOU would like to live. We’re only saying that you need to allow other people to live the way THEY want to live.

Good luck, try and think positively and optimistically.

Why is it that everything christians want and do, others want and do, but they want it the way they choose, then the christian says that reflects on us it can’t be, then the others get upset…seperate Government from chruch..look have your own type of uniting, why get angry with christian who don’t accept it…the constitution says the government will not dictate what someones religions will be..they will not interfere. I feel there is alot of interfering with peoples way of living because of their faith. If you choose to seperate the Government from church then you have violated my rights to have my government to support me. When the Government allows all to be who they are then they have carried out what the constitution said, but because they have to seperate themselves from a select type of people then they have failed. They only support the Athiests right now!!! They can accept the christian way, the Athiest way, the Jewish, etc….by that they have carried out the constitution. They have not chosen any specific belief that our Country had to follow..yet today ATheism is what our country has supported and has refused to respect others who are of faith in God! Don’t i have the right if i get married by a state official to get maried, not united because of athiests whining or gay people who have to have what christians have.

You don’t understand what separation of church and state means. It means, government doesn’t get involved with church, religion, or spirituality in any way. That isn’t a support of atheism, it’s equally not interfering with any of us. It’s a mystery to me how anyone can argue that because of their religious beliefs they should be able to do anything: molest young girls, keep children from being taught scientific fact, kill people, take drugs, etc. You’re wrong!

No one wants what Christians have; keep your fantasies and your guilt. Your religious beliefs come second to the laws of this country, not the other way around. If you would like to argue differently then you must also be for the freedom of Satanic cults to practice their religion in whatever way they deem fit. Would you be OK with Islamic Fundamentalists killing their daughters for Honor Crimes? Only if you’re an idiot, or a religious fanatic yourself.
