Update: Boycott ‘Rockstar’ Drinks

2009 July 9

It seems public pressure does work.

From change.org-

Chalk this up to the power of the netroots and the willingness of a company to take a step toward equality.  Change.org, along with The Bilerico ProjectThe Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern NevadaGLSEN (The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), The Trevor Project, and Michael Rogers of PageOneQ.com have reached a bold agreement with ROCKSTAR Energy Drink, with the company releasing a statement today that affirms its support for LGBT rights, expands the LGBT-friendly corporate policies in its offices, and announces $100,000 in donations to LGBT rights organizations.

And from Rockstar,

ROCKSTAR’s CEO Russell Weiner says, “It has recently come to ROCKSTAR’s attention that there might be a misconception about our company’s policy and my personal support for LGBT rights. We apologize for that misunderstanding, and want to make clear today that our company fully supports our LGBT employees and our LGBT customers.”

It’s easy to boycott something if you don’t drink it anyway, so I guess I participated in the boycott? Should have followed the story earlier so I could have bought a case. :)

Wow. I didn’t expect that to happen. Good for them.

I’m shocked actually that the boycott got that much attention.
