More Conservative Racism

2009 July 17

It’s not hard to find examples of racism coming from the Republican party or from conservatives in general.  It seems that since Obama was inaugurated, fear of minorities has come out of the closet and is enjoyed publicly.  You can find numerous examples online; check out some of them here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.  We’ve got the Young Republicans presidential runner-up posting racist comments on her Facebook page, we’ve got racist GOPers attacking Sotomayor for being a Latina woman, and we’ve got the most popular radio show host in the nation spouting racist crap daily.

Many white Americans may have thought that racism in America was disappearing, that it isn’t the problem that it use to be.  Well, that may be because people were hiding their racism a little better or it may be that white America wasn’t paying attention.  Either way, the racist Right is coming out strong and they’re not afraid to show there racism.  Undoubtedly, they consider it “pro-American.”

Gary Frago, a councilman in Atwater, CA is the most recent addition to the racist Right.  And his defense?  Everybody does it.

“I don’t see where there’s a story, I’m not the only one that does it,” Fargo said in his defense, after the Merced Sun Star published the offensive emails. “I didn’t originate them, they came to me and I just passed them on.”

You can pass on whatever you’d like to Gary.  Here’s some contact info:

I’m so tired of American racism.  I’m tired of American bigotry.  I’m so tired of the bullshit ‘reverse racism’ claims that

people like Rep. Sessions and Rep. Graham are trying to make now with Sotomayor.  White men have been oppressing every other race since the dawn of America.  Do these people seriously think that we’re all being treated equally?  Do they think that everyone in America has the same options, the same chances, the same opportunities?

I find it ironic that people can complain about Sotomayor being discriminated against, but at the same time it is perfectly acceptable for her to say “a wise Latina woman with the richness of her [sic] experience”. Isn’t it racist for her to be using her race as a determining factor in her qualifications? I know people will respond with “but she’s referring to the unique experiences of her Latin culture”. Ok, fair enough, but if a white man (or woman to some extent) said “a wise man with the richness of my experience”, that is immediately taken as being offensive and racist. Why a double standard? The fact of the matter is this – racism is not going to go away. People will never stop noticing the differences in appearance, language, behavior of other people, just as people will never stop noticing the fact that a cat looks different than a dog. People should not be forced to like these differences either. Maybe I’m not attracted to the way black skin looks. I’m not going to hurt the person because of it or be mean to them, the same way I wouldn’t hurt or be mean to a person with a hair color I found unappealing. That has nothing to do with racism, but just with being a level headed person. In my opinion, using one’s race to make oneself seem more qualified, or anything positive, is just as bad as discriminating against someone because of their race. If we want racism to go away, race must be seen as a non-issue. Too many groups these days still try to force the “struggles” of whichever race they represent down the throats of others. As long as this continues and as long as people still act like it is 1960 and we are in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement, race will never be seen as a non-issue and problems surround race will never lessen.

Come on Godless! Geez, you can do better than a picture of a 1950’s class room! So, Sonia Sotomayor has been attacked for being a “Latina woman”…??? huh??? I failed to see that, or hear that and I watched that dog and pony show until it was coming out of my ears…actually waiting to hear Ms. Sotomayor answer one, just one question. She didn’t. “for being a Latina woman”…gawd!
Had ANY one said something like, “A white male could make better judgements than a Latina woman”…now THAT my Godless friend would have been racist.

Yeah, there were no racist comments during the confirmation hearings, except the “explainin’ to do,’ comments, the constant mentioning of her not giving the same judgement as other Latinos whom they (Sessions, Graham) agreed with more, and again the constant attacks over a comment she made that wasn’t racist in the slightest but has been falsely called such. She didn’t say a Latina woman will make better decisions than a white male. She said she “hoped” that a “wise Latina woman” with the “richness of her experiences” will come to a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t had that life.

Yeah, I’d agree. The GOP is trying to push this picture of the poor white man being oppressed, when that has never been the case; it’s always been the other way around.

A picture from the 1950s seemed appropriate. That IS what so many conservatives seem to want America to look like again. Oh, the good ol’ days when men were men, women were in the kitchen, and minorities knew their place. It was a time of peaceful innocence. It was a time when ‘the gay’ knew better then to act that way in public. Everybody was happier, just like on Leave it to Beaver, and Father Knows Best. Come on Steve, you want the Leave it to Beaver America again, don’t ya’.
